What is Istikhara?
Istikhara means to seek good from Allah The Almighty and can only be done when one has the intention to seek good for himself or others. Any prayer that asks Allah to help in choosing the best decision on a certain matter is called istisaha. Thus, by doing istikhara in choice of marriage partner, one is able to approach the decision with confidence and clear vision once one has entrusted it to Allah.
Method of Performing Istikhara
The istikhara dua is done in moments in which a person is in between two decisions and is not quite sure of which one to make. The method is as follows:
1. First of all one must work on their iman and reliance on Allah. They should do two rakahs of nafl salah and say all that is good about Allah as they can in this prayer. They should be prepared to understand that only Allah who is omniscient and wise can make the right decision.
2. After praying the two rakahs with complete devotion and humility to Allah then they may recite the istikhara dua. The words of this dua can be typed out or purchased in any dua book or search engine. In other words, this dua seeks Allah’s blessing to be bestowed upon a person’s choice if that choice is considered to be the best for that person in both this world and the hereafter.
3. In conclusion, after reciting this dua, one should go to sleep most especially at night when one is so exhausted. Allah should be the only one that they trust in to lead them to what is better in this life. Sometimes, the answer can be received on the same night or within the next days as a feeling or a dream. Otherwise, they may someday bend toward a decision with contentment in the heart as the ultimate goal.
When to Perform Istikhara?
Istikhara may be performed at any stage when seeking to get married:
– One should not proceed and forward a marriage proposal to anyone
– For instance, when one gets an offer to get married and he has to decide whether to accept the offer or reject it.
